What are the weight limits on the flight from San Jose to Puerto Jimenez?

You may have one checked bag up to 40lbs and one carry on up to 10lbs with a charge of $1 per extra lb.

Can we stay somewhere other than Crocodile Bay?

I don't think there are other places to stay in the area. We are in the middle of nowhere.

Can I come in early or stay late?

Great idea! Come in a couple days early or stay a couple days late to experience all of the other things at Crocodile Bay. It's a world-class fishing destination. Or do some zip-lining, hiking or relax at the spa.

Is this a photography conference or a workshop?

It's really a hybrid of the two. You get to work with a variety of instructors, but the field sessions will be in small groups so that you get hands-on help. A typical photography workshop can't match the energy and excitement that you'll experience with this many attendees and instructors working together. Plus, you'll get to work with several instructors to get multiple perspectives on wildlife photography.

Will I get to work directly with the instructors?

For sure! You'll work with the instructors in the field, in the classroom and you'll be able to ask questions during meals and on our way to our excursions. The instructors are here to help you and will be available to answer all of your questions and to help you get amazing images.

Why did you choose to organize the conference in July?

The summer is considered the green season for Costa Rica. It's the time that the jungle comes alive with wildlife. Winter is the tourist season in Costa Rica making prices much higher. October and November are the worst months for rain. We've made every decision to give you the best chance to get amazing wildlife photos.

Do I need a passport or travel visa?

If you're coming from the United States, you will need a passport to leave the country but you do not need a travel visa to visit Costa Rica.

How many photographers is the event limited to?

It depends on how many people choose single or double occupancy. Crocodile Bay has 28 guest rooms. Once these are full, the event is full. This will be the smallest, most intimate, conference we've ever organized.

What excursions are available?

You'll get to choose from a wide variety of half-day and full-day excursions including The Osa Rainforest, The Monkey Tour, Corcovado National Park, Bird excursion, Jungle Night Walk, Casa Orquideas Botanical Garden, Golfo Dulce Boat Excursion, Sierpe River Boat Tour, Osa Wildlife Sanctuary and more!

When do we choose our excursions?

We'll choose excursions by March 1st. You will get to do all of the excursions that you want to do. We will ask you which excursions you want to do and create the schedule based on your responses.

Is the area safe?

Yes! I know several photography friends that have led workshops and have stayed at Crocodile. Every one of them says that the people in the area are super friendly and that they have had no issues.

What camera equipment do I need?

A telephoto lens is ideal but it does not need to cost $10,000! A Canon or Nikon 100-400mm or a Tamron 150-600mm would work great. You may also want a macro lens or extension tubes to photograph the frogs, flowers and smaller critters.

We'll also have equipment for you to try in the field from our vendors.

Is it going to rain?

It probably is going to rain at some point during the trip. It is the rainforest. But the rain usually is not an all-day rain. You can work around the periods of rain.

What wildlife will we see?

There are no guarantees, but there's a pretty good chance we'll see all four species of monkeys found in Costa Rica, two species of sloths, macaws, toucans, crocodiles, hummingbirds, red-eyed tree frogs, poison dart frogs,

I know it's a wildlife photography conference, but will we get to experience anything other than wildlife?

Ralph Velasco is a travel photographer. He'll be taking people to the local cacao plantation and to explore the small local town. Anne Belmont specializes in photographing flowers and butterflies. She'll be taking people to the local botanical garden and butterfly house. But if you want to chase monkeys all day every day, you can do that too!

How much time will we spend sitting in class?

No one wants to travel all the way to Costa Rica just to sit in a classroom. We will have some presentations in the evening, but most of the time will be spent in the field. We will even have some online classes before the event to make sure that you're ready to go as soon as you get here.

How is the food and lodging?

According to every one of my friends that has visited Crocodile Bay, the food, the staff and the accommodations are fabulous.

Will the excursions be physically demanding?

Unlike some of our conferences, there is very little hiking involved. Many times we'll find the wildlife on the side of the road on our way to a destination.

Is this conference designed for beginners or advanced photographers?

This is for all levels of photographers. If you're a beginner you're still going to get amazing images. If you're an advanced photographers, our professionals will show you what it takes to get professional quality images.

Will we shoot at night?

Yes! Many of the animals in the rainforest are only active at night. There will be night jungle walks available where you'll go with one of our instructors and a guide to find these animals around the resort. We'll have lights and use flash to photograph these animals in the dark.

Do I need travel insurance?

We recommend that you get travel insurance for this trip. You never know when you or a family member has a last-minute emergency and you can't make the trip.

What is your refund policy

You can read our refund policy here.

Will we learn about the wildlife or just photograph it?

The local guides are experts on the local wildlife. They'll not only help us find the animals, they will help us understand their behavior and to make sure the we do not disturb the animals in any way.

We love wildlife photography because we love wildlife and nature. Photography gives us the opportunity to find these amazing animals, but, in the end, it's about the experience with nature more than about hanging that image on our wall. We have some other surprises that we are planning related to the science and conservation of the wildlife in the area.
